Milton Invitational Preview

Milton High School will host nine cross country teams on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at the 2nd Milton Cross Country Invitational. This will be the largest meet ever held on the Milton HS home course.

Varsity Girls Race
We’re honored that the girl’s varsity race will showcase so many outstanding metro-Atlanta cross country running programs. Ranked schools Alpharetta, Milton, Marist, Riverwood and Holy Innocents’ should vie for the win with South Forsyth and Chattahoochee also in the mix. The Marist school will be in contention with their large and talent-deep program even if their top varsity girls do not attend.

The individual race will be the highlight of the meet as the 2008 AAAAA state cross country runner-up Sydney Marshall (Chattahoochee) will tackle the tough, hilly and demanding Milton home course. Fulton County rival and reigning AAA state cross country champion Brett McDaniel (Riverwood), fresh off her new course record at the Roy Benson Double Dip @ Marist should be right with her. Other top contenders include Alpharetta’s Dylan Hassett, Holy Innocents’ Callie Bergen & Greer Gafford, Milton’s Chelsea Weiermiller and Steph Butzer, and the duo of Allie Buchalski and Julia Hellman from John’s Creek.

The high school course record is 21:20 set by Milton’s Lauren Jones (2008) and the open course record is 21:07 set by Katherine Showalter (2008).

Varsity Boys Race
The boy’s team race will be up for grabs with many teams rebuilding this year and some still trying to find out how strong they are after only a few meets so far this season. South Forsyth, Chattahoochee and Marist should battle for the title. Marist had strong performances’ at the Kosh Classic, Mercy Invitational and their own invitational, while Chattahoochee and South Forsyth were neck-and-neck at the Berry Invitational, separated by only one point in team scores. Milton, John’s Creek, Riverwood and Alpharetta have had mixed results in their previous meets so far this season, but any of them could have a breakthrough performance.

The race for the individual win could be any of four runners with equal shot to grab the title. South Forsyth’s Dylan Walker looks to be the favorite after his strong 2nd place finish at Berry, although Chattahoochee’s Austin Ulich will want to get the better of him, having finished just five seconds behind Walker in the race at Berry. Other strong contenders are Milton’s Tyler Tomy (course record holder) and Riverwood’s Conner McDaniel.

The high school course record is 18:44 set by Milton’s Tyler Tomy (2007) and the open course record is 17:35 set by Ian McCann (2008).
